New York Part 4 - World Trade Centre
I'm either still jet lagged, or the excitement of the past few days (not to mention lack of sleep) is catching up with me. It's gloomy and cold outside. The perfect day to go visit the World Trade Centre memorial. Some alterations to the metro's service today, it's all very confusing, in the background a jazz band cheers the travellers up. I eventually make it to the right stop. I should have brought an umbrella. My wide rim hat provides some protection. I walk through make shift path, lots of building works around. The new WTC building towers above in all its glory. A piazza opens, is that the sound of rain or water fountains? I approach the huge square gaping hole in the ground, all black granite stone, water falling down all around into a pool and then draining further into a smaller dark square hole disappearing into the abyss. All around are names carved in the black steel. Loads and loads of names. And a single white rose placed over one of them. People snapping pictures. I snap pictures. Down into the darkness, up towards the sky.
There are two of those square holes in the ground. Presumably on the footprints of the two towers. Ever falling water crushing down.
The queue to the newly opened museum is so long, and it's raining. I really ought to stay and go in, who knows when I will next be here. But I'm cold and tired. I still need to get some clothes for Monday's event. Shoes, trousers, belt.
I reluctantly make my way to browse some shops. And get some food. More and more I find shopping to be irritating and draining. Or maybe it's just me, getting more irritable and impatient with age. Although I'm again impressed by the efficient and helpful service I get everywhere. Trousers - check, shoes - check, belt - check. Time to go home for a lazy evening.
Alan shows me the new Muppets series, not quite like the original, but good fun. The news is almost exclusively about the approaching New York presidential primaries vote due to take place soon. I'm genuinely fascinated.
Tomorrow I'm moving from Alan's in Manhattan to Katrin's in Brooklyn. She proposes I join her for yoga tomorrow. Would do me good. Early night for me.
